"Portrait" is a series that displays a fascinating balance between abstraction and color. Facial features in Lee’s portraits represent elements of blackness to be celebrated and valued. Lee's paintings are brilliantly composed to highlight lips, noses, and ears in artificial colors, an ode to pop art, becoming what he refers to as afro-pop. By celebrating and reclaiming skin color, facial characteristics, and the black body as a valued presence, his practice challenges racially charged depictions of the black figure throughout art history.
